Christmas: Darkest Before the Dawn

Isaiah 8-9; John 1:9-14 CSB | Trey VanCamp | December 18, 2022

OVERVIEW

Every Christmas we exchange gifts to reinforce the American dream: “I just want more than what my parents had.” More money, more cars, more vacations, and the list goes on. For decades, this life script has worked in producing a greater economy and seemingly satisfied citizens.

But what happens when the younger generation begins to reject this life script handed down to them without replacing it with a better one?

We find ourselves in a cultural moment that the Bible calls darkness. This darkness is composed of our ignorance and malevolence. To put it bluntly, we are the blind leading the blind as we walk down the slippery path that leads to destruction and decay.

In this Christmas message, we will look at man’s failed attempts to escaping this darkness (Isaiah 8:19-22) and God’s gracious solution to deliver us into His glorious light (Isaiah 9:1-7).
